Chiffon Aoi (b. 2022 - d. 2065), better known by her alias, Chiffon Fairchild, was a third-year student at West Genetics, as well as the former Student Council President of West Genetics Academy. She was ranked 1st among all West Genetics third-year students, as well as being one of the world's five top-ranking Pandora, ranking at #1, before her death at the climax of the 11th Nova Clash. She is Maria Lancelot and Gengo Aoi's daughter and Kazuha, Kazuya, and Arcadia's aunt.

Background[]

Chiffon was believed to be a foreign student from Canada with four Stigmata. Prior to the arrival of Kazuya Aoi at West Genetics, she had already worked her way into the rank of Number One–the strongest and most potent–amongst all third-year students, acquiring the nickname "The Unmatched Smiling Monster" (不世出の怪物(モンスター) Fuseishutsu no Monsutā) along the way, although she rarely bothers showing it.

She was often seen with Ticy Phenyl, the former Vice-President, who is now the current President of the Student Council.

In her fight with Satellizer and Rana during the E-Pandora Rebellion Arc and the 11th Nova Clash, she revealed to her opponents that she was a "True Pandora".

After her death, she was revealed to be one of the five sisters of Lab 13. She was cultivated from Maria's DNA and possessed an over 80% Stigmatic body, but due to her body's inability to withstand the power of the Stigma, she was put into suspended animation until the problem was solved. She was the first of the "Legendary Pandora" to have been awakened, shortly after Kazuha Aoi's death.

Appearance[]

Chiffon physically resembles an average teenage girl. She generally keeps her eyes narrowed to slits, as they are unnaturally colored and possess a line running down her pupils, similar to a Nova's. She has blonde hair (brown in the anime) that reaches down to her shoulders, two tied up bangs covering her cheeks and two forehead bangs split up in the middle. Aside from her narrowed eyes, Chiffon is well known for smiling constantly, even in battle.

During her first two years at West Genetics, Chiffon had long hair reaching past the middle of her back.

Personality[]

For all her strength, one wouldn't know the extent of it at the first glance. She has taken a laid-back and non-adversarial approach when dealing with matters concerning her duties as the student council president and is very much personable. Although fully capable of enforcing her authority through force (or perhaps because of such a capability), she would prefer to, and is often able to, use voice of reason to resolve problems to the point of appearing goofy and cowardly (she is shown to avoid direct confrontation with Satellizer, when the latter's fight with Miyabi Kannazuki turned into a brutal one-sided beat-down, at the expense of Miyabi and her Limiters) at times.

Though extremely rare, Chiffon can also be sadistic and cold-hearted when her tolerance reaches its limit or her anger is at an apex, such as the time when a group of students beat Ticy Phenyl and humiliated her. She went berserk, destroying everything and everyone in her path. She was on the verge of killing Arnett McMillan before Ticy "stopped" her. This, however, was not the first time Chiffon has gone on a rampage in response to someone attacking her friend. She had done so, years before the start of the series, when her first friend Aureriel was assassinated and died in her arms. Chiffon snapped, causing her to identify and kill all of the assassins, leaving a trail of blood and death in her wake.

Between the E-Pandora Project Arc and the end of the 11th Nova Clash, Chiffon displayed a much more serious yet empathetic personality. She was well aware of the atrocities that the Chevalier had planned but maintained her truly pivotal position as the strongest Pandora over all Genetics Academies by following orders, trying to encourage Elizabeth to do the same as she would be targeted by the Chevalier had she showed any sign of rebellion. When the rebellion occurred and the Nova Clash followed, Chiffon had to forfeit her normally goofy personality completely to fight against her friends and later for them as well. In a heart to heart conversation with Amelia during the climax of the 11th Nova Clash, Chiffon admitted she knew very well the weaknesses of humans and the sins they committed against Amelia and her friends, but she decided to give up her life for her friends as well.

Due to Chiffon's amicable and peaceful personality, many students at West Genetics came to adore, admire and respect her, and were noticeably saddened and grieved by her death.

According to Love Pair Stories, Chiffon is a bit of a party girl, 'infiltrating' clubs, and then dancing. She did this at least twice before Yu-Mi caught her. whether she continued or stops isn't made clear.

Chiffion

Legendary Pandora No.5 is born.

Chiffon is first shown shorty after her creation in a tube, her designation stamped on her arm and thigh. After a time of slumber, the scientist Wina excitedly calls in Chiffon's father Gengo to view the Legendary Pandora. Chiffon is noted to be different from all of her older siblings, possessing less power and lacking the supernatural beauty of her sisters, but having greater stability and the ability to interact with humans and learn from them.

Chiffon is initially emotionless and very naive, lacking the ability to discern when she is hungry and calmly stating that any more hunger could lead to her shutting down. She later spars with Windy May and emerges victorious due to using her abilities in unique ways.

While observing flower seeds blowing in the wind, she is approached by her father who casually gives her information about the seeds and how life sometimes ends. Chiffon asks if human life is going to end as well, to which Gengo replies by stating that a Transcendent Will has decided that it is be so and the Nova are attacking to end humanity. When Chiffon states that she is supposed to stop that Gengo informs her that she can't. Chiffon's purpose was to buy humanity time, nothing more, nothing less. That is the reason she was born. Chiffon echoes Gengo's words.

Chiffon comes across the scientist who has been overseeing her, Wina, in the middle of a crying fit. Unable to connect with the scientist's grief, Chiffon merely asks her to teach her the day's lessons. Wina lashes out hysterically, calling Chiffon a monster and a doll, insisting that humans are capable of living by their own will and screaming that she is leaving Lab 13. Wina was killed shortly thereafter by Windy May, which leads Chiffon to approach her sister's test tube and ask why she did such a thing. Windy May doesn't reply due to her condition, but Chiffon decides to live by her own will and breaks out of Lab 13.

Chiffon's break-out doesn't go quite as planned, with the young woman passing out next to a heap of garbage cans in the midst of a pack of dogs. Aureriel Fairchild finds her and takes her in, feeding her and nursing her back to health. Seeing Chiffon's gloomy disposition, the cheerful young woman takes it upon herself to help Chiffon, showing her around, dressing her, and generally being a good friend. The two slowly bond over this time, with Aureriel's happy demeanor slowly chipping away at Chiffon's emotionless personality. During this time, Aureriel advises Chiffon to always smile and gives her the hair ribbon that would later become one of her trademarks.

During one outing Aureriel attempts to remove Chiffon's medical eyepatch and see her eye, which is heavily Novalized. Chiffon fends off her friend before her older sister, Lucy, arrives on the scene. After a short conversation Chiffon and Lucy begin to battle. Although Chiffon is able to reflect her blows, Lucy aims an attack at Aureriel which Chiffon blocks with her body. Rising to continue the fight, Chiffon is stopped by Aureriel who calms the situation. Before any further action can be taken by any party, Aureriel is shot dead by a sniper. Chiffon brutally slaughters every human soldier present in vengeance after cradling the dead body of her friend and wailing in her pain.

Chiffon is later seen on a train, sitting peacefully and chatting with a human woman, with a happy smile on her face, showing that she has taken Aureriel's words to heart.

ChiffonYoung

Chiffon as a First Year student.

Chiffon "Fairchild" Aoi claimed to be the child of a middle class family who grew up without servants, and thus knows how to do her own chores. She was late getting into West Genetics into her freshman year, missing the initial Carnival, and ended up being grouped into the lowest of three classes (Class C) ranked by points obtained in Carnivals. Thus she ends up being room-mates with Ticy Phenyl, who had zero points (5 points could be obtained by just materializing a Volt Weapon).

At her first Carnival, the Summer Carnival of 2063, she brutally defeated over 40 Pandora's, clearly lost in a blood and battle hungry trance, strongly fueled by her resolve to never stop smiling (advice given to her by her freind: Aureriel Fairchild). Chiffon stops at nothing and shows no mercy, not even to the fleeing or begging. Eventually Elizabeth and Arnett reach the scene of disaster, baffled by its gruesome appearance. Arnett slashed at Chiffon full force across the chest but it did nothing. Chiffon then grabs Arnett`s head in her gauntlet, then asks Arnett what fear and terror feel like. While that was happening Elizabeth, even though seeing Arnett in a dire pinch, is also struck down by fear and becomes incapacitated by it. Just before Chiffon is about to end Arnett, Ticy steps in and begs Chiffon to return to normal, after Ticy's plea and pledge she snaps out of her frenzy and tells Ticy not to forget her words, collapsing a second later in Ticy's arms.

Shocked and in confusion, the Chevalier is at loss over the incident with Chiffon. Thinking that Dr. Gengo Aoi kept "such information" about Pandora's from them, they decided to simply observe Chiffon and not to cross paths with Gengo. Chiffon is then summoned by the Chevalier to "write some reports" according to her. She later reappears at Tii's grave and informs Ticy of her new status as the 3rd ranked Pandora of her year, reason being; she "defeated" a kill-streaking Chiffon and accumulated enough points to barely surpass Arnett (former ranked 2nd before Chiffon and Ticy surpassed her). Ticy is shocked at the news, and Chiffon consoles her by reminding her to always smile and to not forget her promise to work hard.

Freezing: Pair Love Stories[]

Main article: Freezing: Pair Love Stories

Chiffon is first seen with Ticy, giving a report of how students had been frequenting clubs recently. While she agreed it was good for students to have fun, she noted that too much fooling around could have caused problems later. And Pandoras causing trouble was a far more serious matter than mere civilians in her book, something they as the Student Council had to prevent. When Ticy asked if it was right to punish student when they virtually no evidence, Chiffon proposed to go undercover and find the evidence they need, as their first real action as the Student Council. When asked if she was going herself, Chiffon disagreed and said Ticy was coming too. She even went ahead and got a dress for just the occasion, which she bought online.

Chiffon is next seen inside the club, amazed at two men creating a pyramid of wineglasses, and filling up every one. Then she finally noticed Ticy was missing. When she finally found her, she was before a strange youth, and in tears. Incensed at the youth, Chiffon nailed him with a diving kick, and vowed to kill him for making Ticy cry. Ticy tried to plead for mercy, and the "Smiling Monster" wondered why her friend was covering for "this punk?"

Her next appearance is in a small flashback, where she proclaims they will infiltrate another club, especially since "she didn't get to have much fun last time." She is then seen at said club, dancing to her blaring music, much to the delight of the male patrons nearby. Suddenly, she sensed a somewhat foreboding presence, and saw a shadowed figure nearby. Her expression became fearful when she saw the figure was none other than Yu-Mi Kim. The incognito Legendary Pandora knew she needed to make an escape route, and fast. When she saw a sprinkler overhead, she saw what she needed. She leaped towards it with Illusion Turn, produced a cigarette lighter and started a small fire, which activated the sprinklers in the whole club.

The next day, she and Ticy are walking outside on campus grounds, when the same youth from earlier came before them and begged Ticy to make him her Limiter. Chiffon was elated at the development, and offered to give them some privacy as she made herself scarce.

Unfortunately, Yu-Mi soon caught up with her, and gave her a thump on the head and a stern lecture for "visiting the club so often."

Though when the seniors refused to back down, Chiffon finally stepped in and subdued Arnett with but a single blow after performing her Illusion Turn.[3]

Seeing that the situation can potentially bring embarrassment to the third years if allowed to continue, she convinces Elizabeth Mably to put the plans for further retaliation attacks to rest.[4]

Chiffon guarding Maria Lancelot in the Ravensbourne Nucleotide

Chiffon is seen running down the corridor with Ticy, headed to the assembly hall in response to the Code One Alert. Her friend tells her that Abel Rotomaster and Eugene were already en route there, and she acknowledges and then worries about the Nova's impending assault. [5]

Chiffon, Eugene, Ticy, and Abel are seen together, in combat attire. A Code Three Alert was sounded, which indicated enemy units on campus. But instead of being Novas, the enemies were identified as hostile Pandora's, with huge stigmata on their backs. Chiffon and friends were visibly horrified by the announcement.[6]

They are later seen at the Ravensbourne Nucleotide. A lone Nova Form Pandora eventually breached the inner sanctum, which the Monster found amazing. "Is it the parasite Nova's power," she asked the newcomer, "or are the fourth years' specs simply that amazing?" She and Ticy make themselves known, and stand between their enemy and Maria's body. Chiffon manifested her Anti-Nova Trial Version, ready to fight. [7]

In her next panel, Chiffon and Ticy stand victoriously over their defeated adversary, not even a scratch on the Canadian superstar.[8]

Interlude: Forget That, Let's Play Soccer![]

Main article: Chapter 052

Chiffon is first seen outside the campus with Ticy, and asks a couple of underclassmen if they'd like to join her for tea.

Later, she's chosen to be referee of the soccer match compromised of both third years and second years. She quickly asserts control by penalizing Ganessa for tackling Satellizer from the front, an illegal move in soccer. She next issues a yellow card against Rana for pulling down Elizabeth's bloomers. When her rival protested that Rana should have been ejected, Chiffon retorts by saying Rana had only touched her clothes, and since it looked unintentional, she'd earned a yellow card. She then gave Elizabeth a yellow card for ripping up Lana's uniform, then another for Rana for doing the same to Satellizer. She quickly lost control as the match turned into a clothes-ripping fiasco led by the two combatants.

E-Pandora Project Arc[]

Main article: E-Pandora Project Arc

Chiffon arrived with Elizabeth in Alaska Base, showing off her clumsy personality yet again by arriving later then the rest. After seeing the base, Chiffon commented that the facility was just made under Chevalier management and is deployed more regular for civilian use rather than a military. After hearing Scarlet Ohara's speech she indulged the dinner party with her Limiter. Afterwards she and her group met with Roxanne Elipton the rank #2 Pandora in the world ranks, she along with Elizabeth was shocked when Roxanne grabbed Satellizer's boobs frantically, whilst questioning if anyone knows why is the latter is called the "Untouchable Queen." Afterwards she tried to reason with Satellizer on Roxanne's behaviour but the latter dismissed it much to the dismay of Chiffon and Elizabeth who find her reaction "weird".[9]

She was next seen during the mock battle between the Pandora and E-Pandora and apparently was very excited to see how strong the E-Pandora were and even gave a positive comment about Amelia Evans' performance against Elizabeth asking Satellizer's opinion along the way.[10]

She is also present when Elizabeth Mably get herself acquainted with the E-Pandora along with Roxanne commenting that Elizabeth is a born leader. [11]After hearing the announcement about "Mission Synchro" and the usage of Mark IV, Chiffon along with Elizabeth, Roxanne, Charles and Julia discuss the timing and effectiveness of the methods for raising the Stigmata synchronization of the E-Pandora when Charles brought up that their duties is to simply obey and prepared to sacrifice a few to save many along with a sarcastic remark on her title as a "Smiling Monster" Chiffon is more concerned about her "looks" prompting a comical reaction to those listening.[12]

Prior to the E-Pandora rebellion, Elizabeth talked to Chiffon about her thoughts regarding the Mark IV incident, death of Gina and the Chevaliers' continuation of the E-Pandora project despite the failures, Chiffon then commented that it is something that Pandora's cannot do anything about, as it is a higher matter. When Elizabeth pressed on the matter, asking if its okay for her to act as if she never saw the meaningless sacrifices as she tries to get her to do something for the E-Pandora's predicament, as the most powerful Pandora she merely dismissed it and states that they all work to serve the government and that they are soldiers, as such its not their job to think about politics. Chiffon lightly warns Elizabeth that her method of thinking is against the Chevaliers itself and she might get accused of treason if she made one wrong move, as her opponent is the government itself, she then proceeds to remind her that they are Pandora and all they need to do is to fulfill their duties putting politics aside.[13]

Her next appearance was after Chevalier released Elizabeth from torture, Chiffon quietly listens as André laments on how his senpai's decision to help the E-Pandora resulted to her torture, mental breakdown and the economic meltdown of entirety of the Mably Corporation. Chiffon made no effort to stop André from insulting her status as well as blaming her for not helping Elizabeth.[14]

When the rebellion started she was shown trying to stop Elizabeth from helping the E-Pandora escape. When the Elizabeth told her the truth about the rebellion she merely dismissed it while stating that the truth doesn't matter to her and her concerns go with safety of her comrades from West Genetics and the Chevalier orders[15], earning her a slap from Elizabeth, although Chiffon did not stop Elizabeth from leaving remarking to Eugene that she has no obligation to stop her and getting involved in the rebellion.[16]

Chiffon defeats Rana

Defeating the true monsters.

Chiffon confronts Rana Linchen and Satellizer L. Bridget, who have become sympathetic to the E-Pandora. She attempts to trick them into retreating, but is unable to fool Satellizer, who declares that she will fight Chiffon if she has to. Chiffon warns them to stand down.[17] When Rana and Satella refuse to do so, she squares off against them, deflecting and breaking the Volt Weapon of Amelia and delivering a big hit to Rana. After beating up Rana badly, Satellizer notices something intrinsically special about Chiffon and asks if she is a True Pandora or a human. Chiffon finds it an odd question but admits that she is a True Pandora. Satellizer is in disbelief but Chiffon advises her underclassman not to deny her instincts. In response, both Satella and Rana opens their Holy Gate and manifests the wings of light then allowing Amelia to press forward in her mission. Chiffon doubts Amelia will make it far but she realizes that Rana and Satellizer are not average opponents. Chiffon drops her smile and believes she must battle them more seriously.[18]. Rana and Satellizer begin unleashing a barrage of attacks on Chiffon. However, Chiffon absorbs all the attacks and soundly defeats Rana, ripping off her arms in the process. Chiffon comments that Rana and Satellizer were the real monsters.[19] After their fierce battle Chiffon is seen holding Satella's head in her gauntlet, apparently having smashed it into the wall. When both Rana and Satella were knocked out, Eugene tells his "Onee-chan" to stop the battle. Chiffon asked him if he felt the Nova-like signature somewhere in Alaska Base.[20]

11th Nova Clash[]

Chiffon death

Chiffon in her last moments.

Chiffon is still seen with Eugene, and senses a familiar presence deep within the facility; Chiffon lamented that "Humans never learn."[21] When her Limiter asked if she could have handled the new threat, she admitted that while she could have taken on at least one Nova, they had other problems at hand.  Namely Satellizer and Rana, who'd been awakened by the Nova's resonance and became spellbound.[22] The pair attacked with enhanced vigor, more Nova than human at that juncture. She blocked Satellizer's first attack, but winced as she felt the enhanced strength behind the blow, which left a gash in her gauntlet. Rana moved in with a Typhoon Tempest Turn-style attack, but Chiffon evaded it with Illusion Turn. She called the pair idiots for losing control of their Stigmata again. But when she commanded them to regain their senses, she found herself impaled from behind by Satellizer.[23]

Suddenly, all three combatants are immobilized by an immensely powerful Freezing, which Chiffon realized had been used not by her own Limiter, but by Kazuya Aoi instead. Chiffon was glad he stopped them, even if she'd been frozen as well. She heard Eugene's voice, and realized exactly what he had planned. She formed an Ereinbar Set with him, and he deployed a Freezing field that paralyzed both Satella and Rana, which allowed her to escape. Unfortunately, her opponents quickly broke free, and began to assault her once more. "This is bad," she thought worriedly to herself, "if they don't snap out of this, then I'll have no choice but to terminate them."[24]

After Kazuya with some help from Eugene successfully freed Satella and Rana from Nova's control. They remain distracted until Rana noticed her missing arms. When they noticed the battered appearance of Chiffon, they were shocked that someone managed to hammer her before they did. Chiffon surmises that Satella and Rana's lack of memory of their battle was due to their resonance with the Nova but hearing those comments from them make her a tat angry. Then she proceeded to tell them that it was Kazuya who saved them. While the two bicker, Chiffon informed them that due to the Nova presence in Alaska base, Satella and Rana need to participate in the upcoming battle despite their present conditions.[25]

As the Type-Unknown (Amelia) Nova heads to the base's Solar Furnace, the Pandora's are too busy fighting the Type-S and the other Type-Unknown Nova, so that only Chiffon, Satellizer, Rana, Eugene and Kazuya are the ones available to stop it. When Rana asked Chiffon if they are going to take down the Type-Unknown (Amelia) Nova she merely replied that anyone who causes trouble needs to be punished and in addition they cannot let the Nova get any closer to the reactor. Though Rana was quite reluctant, as she argued that they were up against a Nova no one has ever encountered before and they might not have won even if they fought together. When Satellizer asked her if she has any ideas Chiffon replied that she had but one and basically, its to put all of their lives on the line. She then transformed into a more advanced Nova Form, much to the shock of her comrades, summoned her Volt Weapon along with a pair of shields which floated by her sides. Yet despite her current state, she was in complete control of her faculties, as she ordered her comrades to have stayed and watched. She then finally opened her eyes (the first and the last time in Freezing series), and told them to let her fight alone at first.[26]

When Satellizer tried to touch Chiffon she instantly close in to the Type-Unknown Nova using Illusion turn. Face to face with the Nova, Chiffon speaks to it that "she understand its feelings but not everyone can be happy and that is the sad reality."

As the Nova charged and shot a particle beam aimed at the Solar Furnace, Chiffon blocked it one handed at point-blank range, deflecting it into multiple beams that devastated much of the base. When the Nova fired a second particle beam, Chiffon cancelled it out, then she closed in on the Nova's base body, and successfully delivered two consecutive strikes that knocked the Nova down.[27]

As Chiffon continued her attack, Kazuya observed that he already seen Chiffon's Volt Weapon in the 1st Nova Clash data, Satellizer confirms that its Maria Lancelot's Volt Weapon that was named Anti-Nova after her death. The Type-Unknown began to transform in order to better protect its core, noted by Dr. Gengo Aoi who stated that the Nova is more evolved than the previous Nova types.

The Nova-fied Amelia then proceeds to fire a sneak attack upon Chiffon which she managed to have evaded using her Illusion Turn while stating that to stop it she need to pay a price too.

Since Chiffon could easily block/evade the particle beams of the Type-Amelia Nova, the Nova adapted by configuring itself to fire multiple beams from different parts of its body but Chiffon evaded all of them. Chiffon then merged with her Anti-Nova Trial Version Volt Weapon to attach to her body to mimic Amelia's appearance, allowing her to fire multiple particle beams as well while a green Stigmata appeared on her collarbone. Together with her Illusion Turn she quickly fought back the Nova, seriously damaging its gigantic body. The battle continues until Chiffon telepathically hears the Nova's voice.[28]

The Nova fired another particle beam, yet the "Legendary Pandora" deflected it with her wing and deflected it toward the sky. She and the Nova communicated telepathically, and Chiffon tried to comfort Amelia Evans about the mistreatment of E-Pandora as well as her losses in order. She reasoned that the two of them had surpassed the limits of humans, and thus there was no reason to destroy the humans, since they would have been sinking to their level, so to speak. However, she soon saw her efforts were for naught, as Amelia refused to forgive the people who'd harmed her, and those who'd "abandoned her and her comrades to their fate."[29]

Chiffon watched as her opponent transformed into a spherical shape, vowing to destroy everyone at the base. She watched as the spherical enemy began to glow, and knew she planned to self-destruct. Before that happened, she manifested herself before Satellizer, and finally revealed her true self to her underclassman, which she'd showed virtually no one else at the academy. After some brief words, she waved goodbye as her form disappeared in the light.[30] When Amelia finally exploded, Chiffon absorbed the nuclear explosion at the cost of her life. Amelia's spirit appears once more, asking her why she continued to deny her. Chiffon merely stated that she wanted to have protected her friends, as her body began to disintegrate from the explosion. Chiffon laments that she couldn't quell Amelia's anger and suffering. Therefore she decided to shoulder all of the punishment the humans deserved for leaving the E-Pandora to die even if it didn't make up for all the suffering the E-Pandora endured. As Chiffon finally faded away, she asked if they could have called it "even" anyway with a last smile on her face.[31]

After Chiffon sacrifices herself, orbs of light fall from the sky, which heals all of the E-Pandora and returns the two other Nova to their human form. Satellizer believes that the orbs, which give everyone a warm, fuzzy sensation, is Chiffon's love, which is Chiffon's last gift for them. Chiffon had also returned Amelia to her human form and rid the E-Pandora of all the effects of the MARK III and MARK IV drugs. Days later, Chiffon's spirit appears before Ticy Phenyl, comforting the grieving third-year. She tells her that even though she's too nice and acts shy, there was no doubt in her mind that she was the strongest in West Genetics, and that she could have led the academy in her place. When Ticy tried to protest, she reached out and caressed her friend's tear-streaked cheek. She went on to say that as long as Ticy kept smiling, she'd be happy. And wanted her to keep smiling, until they met again. As she disappeared, she left behind her ribbon as evidence of their encounter.[32]

Chiffon's Gift

Chiffon appears to Ticy as an illusion from the black smoke phenomenon with her Volt Weapon deployed.[34] The former student council president does not engage Ticy like the other illusions. Rather, Ticy is too scared to fight Chiffon and the illusion torments Ticy, which is curled behind a rock and all of the devastation crying.[35]

Ticy tries to run away from the illusion, and Chiffon tries to encourage Ticy to muster the will to listen to her kind heart. When Ticy comes across a severely wounded classmate, Chiffon's words turn cruel challenges Ticy to just let the girl die, as Ticy has also abandoned her platoon and her Limiter, Abel. Ticy decides to pick up the girl and keep running until she is cut off by a "Humanoid" Nova. Ticy nearly gives up, but Elizabeth and her Limiter save her, and the retired Pandora tells Ticy to get up so they can attack together.[36]

Seeing Elizabeth fight valiantly against their powerful foe, Ticy recalls Chiffon often stating that she found a Pandora who will lead and unite all other Pandora. Though Elizabeth may not be the strongest, she possesses the highest qualities of a leader. Ticy rises to fight.[37]

When Ticy is cut down by the Nova, Chiffon goads her further and is surprised to hear Ticy declaring she's not going to listen to some illusion anymore, now believing her strength will be devoted to protecting and fighting for Elizabeth. Chiffon illuminates at Ticy's new found willpower and states that Ticy has finally emerged from her shadow. Ticy realizes Chiffon was never an illusion. The deceased Pandora apologizes for teasing Ticy and grants her the power to transcend the limits of Pandora. Ticy proceeds to obliterate the "Humanoid" Nova once Chiffon returns to the lights.[38]

At the end of the clash, Gengo urges Windy May to kill the Nova Commander as a way to avenge her sister, Chiffon, revealing that Chiffon is a Legendary Pandora.[39]

Chiffon appears to Kazuya in his Freezing field

In the dimensional world of Eluka when Kazuya uses his Freezing battling the Goddesses of Balance, Chiffon appeared in the Freezing field and approached him.[41] Chiffon takes Kazuya to the spot where he spent most of his time as an infant with his mother and Cassandra up on a hill under a tree to talk to him on how everything started.

Chiffon gives a background on how Gengo was born by chance in the world full of Nova and how meeting Maria is like a miracle from what he saw and heard from her. She shows Kazuya how his grandfather, who was young at the time made artificial pillars to test the theory of the wave of singularity which became his first experiment. She states that no one believed in Gengo’s theory, but he'll prove them wrong that he's correct and won’t give up showing that special waves are sent to humans to when he was beginning to experiment in to developing special and distinguished devices in the lake and meeting Maria who comes from another world being the beginning of everything. Chiffon reveals the whole truth to Kazuya about the Transcendental Will and how the Novas came to be.

Chiffon explained that Gengo didn't send Kazuya to defeat the Novas on Eluka because the Novas were called from Earth. She also says that humans can escape the Transcendental Will by maintaining the struggle and for that reason Gengo created the Pandoras. Gengo learned from Maria that humans who give up their feelings will perish with the universe as he wanted to understand that desire and become a human being who fights against God. With this, Gengo executed his plan using all the information through Maria with a single point wave reflector that was installed in locations around the world to unite everyone which became effective thanks to the Nova. The device allowed Gengo to recognize the transcendence that created the whole world as "Nova" and the organization that fights them called "Chevalier."

Chiffon tells Kazuya that Gengo, who had came near the Transcendental Will through Maria had modified the Transcendence’s Singular wave and figured out that the effects caused by the energy can be slowed down and Transcendence evolves humans to the pure souls eventually making it one with the energy of the universe. She states Gengo had artificially blocked the evolution and every time the Will of Transcendence had been slowed down, more side effects occurred because souls should have met the Transcendence but couldn't meet. Every time a limit had reached confiscate of the all the souls was observed which gave birth to Nova and that humans consider to be the fearful embodiment of destruction. Chiffon shows Kazuya a flashback of March 2015 when the Transcendental Will was blocked from collecting the souls for the first time. It was the First Nova Clash and revealed once a year the frequency accelerated and that Gengo knew why the Nova appeared but kept quiet and with the use of Faylan, the phenomena caused by the Transcendental had not been stopped. Chiffon states that Gengo probably just wanted to prolong the world in a state where humans can be recognized as humans and wanted salvation. Chiffon reveals to Kazuya that the project's name, Exit Revenant doesn’t include any indication of hope. Gengo didn’t want to know how to bring down the Nova through Kazuya stating that humans, Maria, Nova, and Gengo are trapped in the cycle known as Transcendence which is a forsaken specter who can neither be a part of mankind nor a part of the transcendence. Chiffon believes that Gengo wanted Kazuya to save him from misery. With everything explained, Chiffon sends Kazuya back to Eluka.

Abilities[]

Overview[]

True Form

Chiffon's final Nova Form

  • Chiffon was a feared Pandora throughout West Genetics, being ranked 1st in the academy as well as being ranked 1st worldwide as well. Her nickname was "The Unmatched Smiling Monster" because of the fact she was seen smiling most of the time, even during battles.
  • Chiffon possessed four ordinary Stigmata, as well as a Legendary Stigmata that she kept hidden.
  • Chiffon had a talent for fighting and defeating multiple opponents as seen in her 1st Carnival and her battle against Satellizer, Rana and Amelia. Eugene mentioned to Kazuya Aoi that despite Satellizer and Rana's enhancements as a result of being controlled by the Nova, they were the ones in real danger of being killed, as no Pandora could have possibly fought on equal footing with Chiffon even if they were in Nova Form.
  • Chiffon had a savage fighting style, similar to Humanoid Nova, where she would take nearly all attacks without a scratch, and she would rip off or quickly slice through her opponents' limbs with her clawed gauntlet. She may also use her signature High End Skill to prevent anyone who faced her from fleeing.
  • In addition to her vicious skill in combat, Chiffon was a skilled tactician. In her battle with Amelia she combined her abilities with clever manoeuvres and tactics that allowed her to force her Nova opponent into a stalemate in spite of Chiffon having to defend the Photon Generator from Amelia's attacks.
  • In formal Nova combat, Chiffon was assigned as an All-Rounder.
  • As revealed by Gengo Aoi, Chiffon's body was comprised of over 80% stigmatic tissue, which was clearly evident when she utilized the full form of her weapon, which made her appear far more Nova than human.
  • Despite Chiffon's incredible abilities displayed in the 11th Nova Clash, Lucy Aoi later confirms that Chiffon did not have the same level of enormous power as her older sisters Cassandra, Teslad, and Windy May, but in return she was able to understand and connect better with humans and grow stronger as a result.
  • Chiffon appeared to lack the Vital Frames modification that her other sisters possess, limiting her Soul Energy supply.

Volt Weapon[]

  • Anti-Nova Trial Version (アンチノヴァ・トライアルバージョン Anchi Nova Toraiaru Bājon) is a large gauntlet with bladed fingers, which she primarily equips on her right arm but can be equipped on both arms. It seems to be extremely durable as it is able to break other Volt weapons with ease.[42]
  • It is later revealed to have a more complete form, which includes a gauntlet on her left arm and two floating, shield-like components on each of her sides. Satellizer notes that the Volt Weapon in its complete form is very similar in both appearance and name to the first Volt Weapon wielded by Maria Lancelot.

High-End Skill[]

  • Illusion Turn is a High-End Skill allegedly developed and primarily utilized by Chiffon, serving as her signature technique for which she is infamous.[43] She used it to intercept any fleeing Pandora during her 1st Carnival as well as to quickly dispatch Arnett to break her fight against Satellizer.

Pandora Mode[]

  • In the anime, Chiffon possessed Pandora Mode.

Legendary Pandora Abilities[]

  • Enhanced Strength and Durability
    • In terms of strength, she was able to block Satella and Rana's attacks one handed each.
    • Durability-wise, she was able to withstand Satellizer and Rana's Holy Gates enhanced barrage of brutal attacks without any noticeable damage. She was also able to single-handedly contain a Nova-type explosion caused by Amelia, though at the expense of her life.
    • During her brief battle with Windy May in Freezing: Zero, Chiffon did not deploy a Volt Weapon. Rather, she was able to match Windy May by releasing powerful and invisible energy blasts with a mere palm thrust. She also generated small barriers over her forearm to render all of Windy's attacks useless, although it was noted that Windy was restricted to only 10% of her maximum power during the match. According to the scientists, Chiffon was able to form these barriers by using the plasma in the air around to create "living barriers."
  • Regeneration and Enhanced Resilience
    • She also possessed incredible resilience, which allowed her to fight evenly against a Novalized Satella and Rana, despite being impaled through the chest by Satella. Later, her seemingly fatal wound had already healed by the time she faced Nova Amelia, which indicates she can also regenerate, just like a Nova.
    • Upon her death, Chiffon released a large healing field of stigmatic particles that covered the entire battlegrounds of the 11th Nova Clash.  She also returned another Pandora, Lieutenant Osborne, to her human form after becoming a Nova. Chiffon revived all of the defeated or deceased E-Pandora, reversed the effects of Mark IV, and restored their lost limbs. Finally, Chiffon's power returned Amelia to her human form and even reversed the effects of the Mark III drug that took her crimson hair and nearly her life. Later revealed in the Busters Arc, Amelia's body has since mutated into that of an extremely high-level Pandora due to Chiffon's stigmatic particles.
  • Nova Form
    • Chiffon's Nova Form is the state when Chiffon is at her strongest, and this form features the Legendary Stigma on her trachea. She can enter it at will and uses her full power. She showed the ability to fly and combat a Nova all by herself. She is able to deflect the feared Nova particle beams one handed and at point-blank range.
    • Furthermore, she was also capable of transforming her Volt Weapon. Her shields weld onto the Nova spikes on her back, becoming six wing-like structures, while her gauntlets are attached to the wings and the Stigmata on Chiffon's trachea becomes much thicker. In this form, Chiffon is unable to utilize the colossal strength of her claws but her wings allow her to fire six particle beams.
    • Together with her Illusion Turn, she is capable of deploying multiple copies of herself that could fire beams as well.

Relationships[]

Family[]

Gengo Aoi[]

The one who gave the "five sisters" life, he regarded her as his daughter, and encouraged Windy to avenge her death during the 12th Nova Clash.

Maria Lancelot[]

Since Chiffon was created from Maria's DNA, that made the otherworldly woman her mother. Her weapon, in all its forms, perfectly reflected her mother as well.

Cassandra Aoi[]

Chiffon's eldest sister.

Teslad Aoi[]

Chiffon's second eldest sister.

Windy May Aoi[]

Chiffon's third eldest sister, with whom she had a contentious relationship. Chiffon fought against her older sister in sparring matches to test her abilities. Their relationship hit a downturn when Chiffon was willing to believe that Windy May killed Wina in cold blood and Chiffon deserted the lab. It is unknown if they reconciled before they were put into stasis.

Lucy Aoi[]

Chiffon's fourth eldest sister and the closest to her own age. After Chiffon fled Lab 13 as a result of her duel with Windy May, Lucy was charged with retrieving her wayward sister. This led to fight with blood spilled between the two when Chiffon refused to return due to her friendship with Aureriel, Lucy replied to this by trying to kill Aureriel. Although Chiffon saved the human woman, Lucy's intervention had the unintended consequence of allowing a squad of soldiers to snipe Aureriel down and kill her.

Ryuuichi Aoi[]

Chiffon's only brother, he killed himself years before she was awoken from stasis.

Orie Aoi[]

Chiffon's sister-in-law.

Kazuha Aoi[]

Kazuha is Chiffon's eldest niece.

Kazuya Aoi[]

Chiffon first met Kazuya on the latter's first day at Genetics. She always attempted to help Kazuya stay out of trouble as best as she could. Kazuya is eventually revealed to be Chiffon's nephew. In light of their relationship, her efforts to protect him early on in the series were likely due to their family ties.

Arcadia Aoi[]

Chiffon's youngest niece. It is unknown if Chiffon knew of her existence.

Friends/Allies[]

Eugene[]

Eugene is the Limiter partner of Chiffon. His name is often romanised as "Yujin". He is a second year student who calls Chiffon "Onee-chan" (Japanese for "big sister"; can also translate as "Miss"). His calling of Chiffon as "Onee-chan" may indicate that they are close. However, Chiffon has been shown to treat Eugene quite professionally. It is likely that Chiffon did not even consider Eugene to be her friend, only her Limiter, since she did not even think about him when she was sacrificing herself.

Ticy Phenyl[]

Freezing-Chiffon and Ticy Screensaver

She and Ticy are very close. They have been best friends since Chiffon's arrival at West Genetics Academy in Freezing: First Chronicles. They had a very intimate relationship and were room-mates, and best friends. Chiffon has also claimed that they have had a "intimate time together." Albeit, that was said as a joke on Chiffon's part to several of their classmates that were trying to destroy Chiffon and Ticy's friendship.

The reason behind Ticy's protective nature towards Chiffon is the fact that she wants to protect a true friend's "love", which is the reason why Chiffon remains at the top of the school's ranking, for she will not have anyone have an attempt for an assault on Chiffon without having to go through her first. Ticy could also be protecting Chiffon from herself. Due to having witnessed Chiffon's battle fury and wanting to preserve her kind friend, Ticy doesn't want anyone to engage Chiffon for risk of her best friend's bloodthirsty side rising up again.

After her death Chiffon entrusts her with the mantle of West Genetics' caretaker, stating that she wants her to continue her legacy.

Their friendship would ultimately become a point of contention for Ticy. During the 12th Nova Clash Chiffon's spirit was able to return and confront Ticy over her colder attitude in the wake of Chiffon's death. Chiffon challenged her friend over her icy demeanour and her cowardice for fleeing from the Nova pursuing her. Ticy managed to overcome Chiffon's goading and return to her true self, to which Chiffon helped Ticy transcend as a parting farewell gift to her friend.

Elizabeth Mably[]

Though they were never true friends, Chiffon held her in high esteem. She noted that Elizabeth's caring heart often got her in trouble, though she deemed her worthy to be a true leader. Unfortunately, Chiffon and Elizabeth eventually had a falling out when Chiffon attempted to persuade Elizabeth to abandon the E-Pandora. The two did not have the chance to reconcile before Chiffon's death. Her last wish for Elizabeth would be delivered to her through Amelia Evans, and was for her to take her noble heart to the top.

Roxanne Elipton[]

Chiffon thinks highly of her fellow Pandora, whom she'd first met at the World Assembly two years previously. In her last moments, she notes that while the Immortal seems to act frivolously, she's actually very caring of her fellow Pandora, and would have been deeply missed if she'd perished.

Satellizer L. Bridget[]

Despite being the student council president and rank 1st in West Genetics, Chiffon had shown to be afraid of Satellizer to a degree. When Satellizer glared at her after Chiffon demanded her to step away from Miyabi, she hide behind Ticy in fear. Even so, Chiffon cares about Satellizer and considers her a friend. Despite this, Chiffon did not hesitate to fight and savagely pummel Satellizer when the latter rebelled alongside the E-Pandora. Chiffon later told Satellizer that she was a very fragile person, despite her moniker as "the Untouchable Queen." She was one of the few people that Chiffon ever revealed her true self to, and told her to make good use of the time she was giving her.

Aureriel Fairchild[]

A young girl who took Chiffon in after she escaped from Lab 13. She learned much of her modern mannerisms from the young Fairchild, whose surname she took on when she enrolled in West Genetics. Her death devastated Chiffon, and colored her perception of mankind greatly.

Trivia[]

Chiffon's doppelganger in the world of Eluka.

  • Chiffon's name originates from the chiffon cake, a product of General Mills invented in the 1920s. Incidentally, it is also her favorite food.
  • Chiffon's surname, "Fairchild," is revealed to be an alias, and is taken from her deceased friend Aureriel Fairchild.
  • In the manga, Chiffon is depicted with medium blonde hair, while in the anime it is a brunette color.
  • Chiffon's appearance bears a striking resemblance to Hae-Jung Nah, Hae-Young Nah's older sister from the Korean manhwa Unbalance Unbalance, one of Dall-Young Lim's earlier works, with the only difference being their hair length.
  • Chiffon was the first of the five sisters to be awakened permanently. Her official title was Lab 13 Legendary Pandora Number Five.
  • Due to her lack of Vital Frames, Chiffon had presumably the least amount of Soul Energy among the Legendary Pandora.
  • In the dimensional world of Elca, Chiffon's counterpart is an unnamed merchant working as a cashier.[44]
